NECESSARY DOCUMENTS

Documents needed to travel to Tanzania

The necessary documents for traveling to Tanzania are constantly monitored, and while the information provided here may change, it is advisable to always check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of your country

1. PASSPORT VALIDITY A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity is required. For any changes in passport validity regulations, please inquire at the Embassy or Consulate of Tanzania in Italy or contact your travel agent.

2. ENTRY VISA An entry visa is required for both tourist and business purposes. Obtain the visa through official government sites only, such as:

  1. English Language Procedure (apply at least 10 days before departure).
  2. Italian Language Procedure (operational 24/7, including weekends) with facilitated questionnaire and Consulate assistance in Milan.
  3. In case of last-minute departures (less than 10 days notice), the visa can be obtained upon arrival, solely under the traveler’s responsibility for entry permission.

Strictly avoid any work-related activities with a tourist visa; arrests and fines are common for those found working with visas not permitting employment or business activities.

For purposes other than tourism, consult the Tanzanian Embassy in Rome or the Honorary Consul in Milan in advance.

3. COVID VACCINATION CERTIFICATE All travelers, including Tanzanian citizens and foreign residents returning to the country, must show proof of completing the COVID vaccination cycle (as per their country’s guidelines) with a QR-coded certificate.

Accepted vaccines align with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations. For vaccines accepted in mainland Tanzania, refer to https://www.moh.go.tz, and for Zanzibar, visit https://healthtravelznz.mohz.go.tz.

Alternatively, unvaccinated travelers or those unable to prove vaccination completion must present a negative result from a COVID-19 test upon arrival.

The only accepted test is the RT-PCR or NAAT (molecular swab), to be conducted at an accredited and nationally recognized laboratory in the country of departure within 72 hours before Tanzania’s scheduled departure. Travelers from countries with COVID-19 variants of particular concern, or those who have visited these countries in the last 14 days, must undergo a rapid test upon arrival at their own expense. The cost is 10 USD or 23,000 TZS for mainland Tanzania and 25 USD or 58,000 TZS for Zanzibar. Passengers testing positive must undergo an RT-PCR molecular test, costing 50 USD for mainland Tanzania and 100 USD for Zanzibar.

Children up to 12 years old are exempt from the COVID-19 test and vaccination certificate presentation.
